Tollens’ reagent, also known as silver mirror test, is a chemical test used to differentiate between aldehydes and ketones. Aldehydes are capable of undergoing oxidation to carboxylic acids, while ketones cannot. Tollens’ reagent, which consists of silver nitrate, ammonia, and sodium hydroxide, is reduced by aldehydes but not ketones. This reduction forms a silver mirror on the inner surface of the test tube when an aldehyde is present.
