Cathode rays are negatively charged rays. They are made up of negatively charged particles called electrons. Here are some things to know about cathode rays: Source Cathode rays are emitted from the cathode, which is the negative electrode, within the walls of a discharge tube. Discovery Sir John Joseph Thomson discovered electrons in 1897 after many experiments involving cathode rays. Deflection Cathode rays deflect in an electric field. When the top aluminum plate was negative, the rays moved down. When the upper plate was positive, the rays moved up.
