Social solidarity with an emphasis on group consciousness, cohesiveness, and unity. Familiar in the pre-Islamic era, the term became popularized in Ibn Khaldun’s (d. 1406) Muqaddimah. Asabiyyah is neither necessarily nomadic nor based on blood relations.
