Explanation

It served as capital of the Soviet and later independent Kazakhstan from 1929 to 1997. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Astana (known as “Nur-Sultan” as of 23 March 2019) it was renamed to Nur-Sultan after the departing Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbayev.
