The tests were underground and used boosted fission/fusion devices. The tests were part of Project-706, which was active from 1974–1983. The tests were codenamed Chagai-I. The tests were intended to test new weapon designs rather than study the effects. Health impacts The tests had a significant impact on the health of the residents of Chaghi. The tests led to an increase in cancer, birth defects, respiratory problems, and other health issues.
