Explanation

Islam was declared the state religion of Pakistan in the 1973 Constitution. This was after Pakistan’s first general elections. The 1973 Constitution established Pakistan as an Islamic Republic. Article 2 of the Constitution states that Islam is the official religion of Pakistan. The Constitution also established the Shariat Court and the Council of Islamic Ideology to interpret and apply Islam. The Constitution requires that all laws conform to the injunctions of Islam as laid down in the Quran and Sunnah. The Constitution also reinstated the injunction barring enactment of laws repugnant to Islam. The Constitution created the Council of Islamic Ideology, which includes members from the superior judiciary and Islamic scholars. The 1973 Constitution was created by an elected Parliament after Pakistan’s first general elections.
