The Khilafat movement , also known as the Indian Muslim movement (1919–24). It was a pan-Islamist political protest campaign launched by Muslims of British India. The Khilafat movement was launched in the subcontinent in 1919 . It was a political campaign led by Indian Muslims to preserve the authority of the Ottoman Sultan as Caliph of Islam. Why it started After World War I, the Allies planned to dismember the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Indian Muslims feared that the end of the Khilafat would impact pan-Islamic unity and brotherhood. They believed that western powers were waging a war against Islam. Who led it The Ali brothers, Muhammad Ali Jauhar and Shaukat Ali, were leaders of the movement. Other leaders included Hakim Ajmal Khan and Abul Kalam Azad.
