Pakistan successfully conducted five underground nuclear tests on May 28, 1998. The tests were carried out at the Chagai test site in the Balochistan province. Pakistan’s nuclear tests were in response to India’s nuclear tests earlier that month. The tests made Pakistan the seventh country in the world to have nuclear weapons and the first in the Muslim world. The tests were carried out in the Ros Koh Hills of Balochistan. Pakistan also detonated a sixth device two days later at a site 100 km (60 miles) to the southwest. Outside experts questioned the announced yields and even the number of tests. Pakistan celebrates May 28 as Youm-e-Takbeer, a day of national pride and significance. Celebrations include flag hoisting, atomic energy exhibitions, award ceremonies, singing patriotic songs, entertainment and military programs, speeches, and more.
