António Guterres is the current Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). He has held this position since January 1, 2017. Background: Guterres is a Portuguese politician and diplomat. He was born in Lisbon in 1949 and has a degree in engineering. He was the prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. He was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015. He was elected Secretary-General in October 2016, succeeding Ban Ki-moon. He is the first European to hold this office since Kurt Waldheim in 1981.
