The Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates are responsible for the seismic activity in the Himalayan region. Explanation The Himalayas are a result of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The collision began 40–50 million years ago and continues today. The plates are both continental landmasses with similar rock density, so one plate couldn’t be subducted under the other. The pressure from the collision caused the plates to buckle and thrust skyward, forming the Himalayas. The Himalayan region is prone to earthquakes because the plates continue to move, releasing pressure and causing them to slip against each other. The 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake and the 2015 Gorkha earthquake are examples of large earthquakes that have occurred in the region.
